It’s all Greece to Me: Athens and the Islands: October 2019

‘Travelling – it leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller’

(Ibn Battuta)

It is apt that the Greek flag is blue and white, as this trip will introduce you to the whitewashed towns of Oia, Fira and Mykonos, and the blue waters which lap Patmos, Rhodes, Crete and Santorini, all set against a never ending blue sky. Greece truly is a beautiful picture postcard.

There are several thousand Greek islands, 200 odd of which are inhabited, and this trip gives you a taste of some of her more beautiful ones, with some Turkish delight in the form of Ephesus thrown in for good measure. You begin on the mainland in Athens, a city which has been continuously inhabited for over seven thousand years. On this trip you will be not only feasting your eyes upon world famous sights such as the Parthenon, but also feasting upon the world famous olive oil (Athens’ namesake, the Goddess Athena brought forth the olive tree for the city), as you will enjoy several opportunities to taste the different varieties from across Greece.

Having enjoyed some of the mainland, it is then a case of bon voyage as you set sail on your own Greek Odyssey which starts in Mykonos and ends in Santorini where you will disembark to enjoy a few days and nights exploring the beautiful scenery and stunning sunsets. It is then back to Athens for a final glimpse of the Acropolis at night before you head home, your photo and memory bank both bursting to capacity.

 Day 1: 10thOctober – Welcome to Greece!

Today you will be met by private transfer and whisked away to your hotel to relax and unwind before meeting for an evening aperitivo and your first opportunity to sample Greece’s delicious food. (D)

Day 2 : 11thOctober – Ambling around Athens

Today you do as the locals do by taking a leisurely morning walk around with a stop for the ubiquitous Greek coffee and a koulouri (sesame bread ring) to sustain us.  As with all things Greek, the koulouri can be traced back to antiquity as they were based upon the round bread served to slaves and some of the first street food. Today, old and new seamlessly blend as is in evidence with the Acropolis museum, a spectacular architectural masterpiece and home to ancient masterpieces. It is to here we head before finishing our morning’s visit with a visit to the piece de resistance: the Parthenon. Lunch and the afternoon are free before you come together again for a truly special Greek evening complete where you will not only learn how to dine Greek style, but also learn how to dance Greek style! Opa! (B,D)

Day 3: 12thOctober – Mesmerised by Mykonos

This morning we head to the port to set sail on our own Odyssey. Enjoy the wonderful views and fabulous Greek weather as you sit back on deck and enjoy a cocktail or two whilst setting sail. In the late afternoon you will dock in the beautiful island of Mykonos, famed for its iconic windmills and ‘Little Venice’. Here you can enjoy a sunset aperitivo before taking a wander through the small streets with their beautiful boutique shops. (B, L, D)

Day 4: 13thOctober – Extraordinary Ephesus and Pretty Patmos

From the famous façade of the library to the awe-inspiring amphitheatre, Ephesus truly is a Turkish delight. Today you have the chance to learn about those who were there before you by following in their footsteps through the site. In the afternoon it is to Patmos, an island most well-known for being home to St John’s Cave, where he wrote Revelations. After a visit to the cave there is the chance to sample the local food and wine. After all, to know a place you have to taste it, every last little bit. Yammas! (B, L, D)

‘Experience, travel, these are an education in themselves’

(Euripides)

Day 5: 14thOctober Roaming in Rhodes

Ravishing Rhodes is our stop today. A day which sees you taking a wander through the old town before enjoying some time at the beach with a long leisurely lunch, just the way the locals eat. A surprise then awaits before you return to the ship to set sail for Crete.  (B, L, D)

Day 6: 15thOctober : Cruising into Crete and Sailing into Santorini

Rethymnon was European Wine City in 2018, however this is not the only reason to visit this Cretan delight. A beautiful old town, charming harbour and lively atmosphere are just a few of the reasons to come and visit this lovely little city. Spend the morning soaking up its culture before you once again set sail for Santorini.

Upon arrival in Santorini, you will be whisked off to your hotel to enjoy some rest and relaxation, perhaps a dip in the pool, and your first of many opportunities to gaze out on the wonderful views. This evening, following sunset drinks you will dine upon Santorini’s local cuisine.

Day 7: 16thOctober  – Scintillating Santorini

Today you exchange the big boat for a smaller vessel today as you set out on a private Catamaran cruise, including an opportunity to visit the caldera, the famous volcano of Santorini and including a visit to the thermal baths, so don’t forget your swimming costumes! A picnic lunch and drinks are also provided. The rest of the afternoon and evening are at your leisure.

(Andre Simon)

 Day 8: 17th October – Santorini

This morning you will set out to sample some of Santorini’s local wines, with a light lunch to soak up some of the alcohol. This afternoon there is the opportunity to take a late afternoon spectacular walk to Fira or, alternatively take a taxi there. After a catch up for yet more sunset drinks the evening is at your leisure.

(B, L)

Day 9: 18th October – Back to Athens

After enjoying a final morning’s relaxation, it is then time to head back to Athens via high speed ferry. Upon arrival you will be whisked away back to the hotel, ready to relax before perhaps enjoying a final stroll around the city. Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner as you toast Greece and your Big Fat Greek Adventure 😉 “Opa!” (B, D)

Keep me on the list for 2021 since I’m already booked with other tours. Would love to see northern Spain – southern France, Morocco, and Greece’s islands that are not well known.
